I hear that the hill is in need of major repair. It has come to our attention thru Akronites that the hill is messed up. I guess the rain water that always ran down the gully beside the track diverted and went under the track causing sand to ruin the starting mechanism and the hill has a huge drop in lane one and is filled with sand. My question is: Is there any type of maintenance program or is everyone blind. Sounds to me like this was not a priority with the staff and now the hill is crapped up. I'm waiting on pics and I will post them. Incompetence is ruining this sport.

Heard about the track today, so went by to see. The Hole in lane one is 2 1/2 hash marks above where the starting plates are. (Possibly where starting plates were years ago??) The track has fallen down at that spot a good 12 inches all in lane one. From the hole down to the starting plates the track is wavey. The hole is the width of lane 1 and about 6 or 8 feet long. Sand that washed out is in the stating plate paddle holes and washed all down the track. Appeared to be alot of sand on half of lane one from just above the tunnel (about the old starting point for superkids local race a few years ago) all the way to the finish line.

The track looked okay from the starting plates on down on the surface but who knows what damage is underneath the surface. Heard there was suppose to be an engineer looking at it today.

My thought was when they moved starting plates years ago the probably filled old hole with sand and then put in the base and then paved. Thats probably what washed out. But they also probably have sand under and around the current location of the starting plates (OR DID HAVE) . So who knows how bad this might be.

If no one gets pics here, I'll try to get some this weekend. It will depend on how I feel. Having knee surgery on Friday.

Was at the track Wed. evening, I believe DVF281 assesment is correct as to the placement of the "sink hole" in lane one. It is in the spot where the start plates were years ago and a lot of sand has washed into the starting block "pits" under the metal plates in both lanes one & two, packed in pretty good around underground mechanisms'. City engineers/road repair crews were out to look at ans assess damage and try to determine why. Been tols that underground water line going into fire hydrant burst and, well, made a mess of things. Personally believe that with the abnormal rain fall this past fall and early winter coupled with above average snowfall, (in some places 18" in a 24 hour period three weeks ago) along with a lot of thawing and freezing has added to the problem that a burst pipe can also cause. Keep in mind, all damage is ABOVE start line area and except for needing a lot of sweeping, the track race surface still looks pretty decent. BHH

Is this a city problem or a derby problem? I thought it was on the racing surface. Nice to know its not.

It would be great to get some pics of the damage if anyone is available.

If I can recall my conversation with Mr. Hunstman.

The city offers some help, versus the cost of getting a engineer.

The city may also aswell help with fixing and repairing the track surface.

I will asume this is the city being nice and helping the AASBD out.

As costs can sky rocket when it comes to road repair / track repair.

Since from what I have read and understand, the city has loaned the AASBD money in the past or the city supports the AASBD in many ways.

Hopefully what I am saying in accurate and correct.

Forgive me if this in correct, as I am trying to recall a conversation from a few months back.

Sincerely,

Sporty

that shows signs of a serious water problem under the track that could run a long way down the hill if not addresed right now it will totally ruin the track

jerry pearson- 04-07-2008
Yes, but look at the bright side. If lane one is ruined and only lanes 2 and 3 remain in tact, what a great opportunity to run a two lane swap race.

scoutdad- 04-07-2008
ok so which one of you guys turned loose the gopher that made the hole that the water washed out?

derbyman- 04-07-2008
maybe it was DIGGER from NASCAR!!!

derbyman- 04-07-2008
that's one serious hole, hope it doesn't run down the length of the track!

Track is being repaired by city water dept as of 4/8. It was a broken main 6" and washed alot of sand out and caused the track to sink. This is above the plates on the hill. Under the plates got a lot of silt but will be cleaned by the city also. Will be ready to race on for may races.

Heard from Stan this morning that the track is fixed. If that is so.....good job!
