Has anyone tried checking cross bind by using monofilament fishing
line? If so can you outline the procedure?

That's what I've been using...saw it in Akron last summer. Take the brake pedal off...tie a clove hitch on one spindle, run the line over the corner of the square part of the axle then diagonally across the car to the next spindle, running it over the square part and then doing a few wraps around the spindle, pull straight across the back of the axle, wrap the spindle a few times and run over the square part and go to the opposite corner so that both lines form an X in the middle of the car. Both lines of the X should touch but when you push down on the one underneath, the top shouldn' t moved but a hair and when you pick up the one on top, same for the bottom. If there is a gap, you got cross bind, and if you move one and the other moves with it, you got crossbind.

Same process, but on one axis (not axle, but axis) wrap the two square stocks with one layer of line before you run the line over the top of the layer to the other axle. That way your line on one axis is exactly one layer higher. The two intersecting lines then should barely touch in the middle when you are at 0 cross bind.

For those having a hard time visulaizing, this is the same process as installing a door frame. If you don't know how, just ask a framer or a finish carpenter.

A lot of people have success with this and you can get it pretty close. A key is to keep your string very tight as any sag will of course occur in the middle and affect your result.
